School Characteristics

Curriculum features

By centering children's learning around the use of stories, with relation to the theme of daily living and supplemented by Whole Language, and project work, the school focuses on children's life experiences and interests, and uses a series of diverse exploration activities and play to help children establish and develop their motivation, interest and ability to learn.

Emotional Education

When children are in new environment and encountering new people, the thing that they need most is a sense of security, and it is also the first condition needed for them to be able to devote themselves to school life and study. Therefore, this school places great importance on emotional education. Teachers effortlessly integrate emotional education in their classes, enabling students to learn to differentiate between different emotions and expressions of their feelings. Teachers also use positive emotions as a motivating tool for children to be in a happy and stable mood and to establish a positive self-image. Children are then able to grow up in an environment that provides security and love, enabling them to develop healthily in terms of both their body and mind.

Whole Language Approach

"Whole language approach" brings all elements of language to the forefront, by allowing children to be exposed to a wider vocabulary in their daily life and using the strategy of daily story time so that children can gain an interest in language. Children are able to build a network of meanings between common words thereby consolidating their foundation and memory for literacy.

The Project Approach

The "Project Approach" is an in-depth exploration of a topic, allowing the topic to be covered deeply and extensively. The objective is to develop children's ability to work independently and confidently when studying and exploring. There is no set form or scale for this approach. It may be carried out by the class as a whole, small groups, or even individually, depending on the interest and ability of the child. The planned network of the "Project Approach" is multi-level and connected. An appropriate "Project Approach" allows children to suggest project topics, make assumptions, search for information, report conclusions and share their findings, from which they can experience the processes and strategies involved in constructing knowledge.

Sensory Motor Activities

Through life skills training, games and activities, the school helps to enhance children's sensory recognition skills, strengthen muscular endurance, improve stability of the arm and wrist, improve finger flexibility, and improve eye-hand coordination, etc., thereby consolidate the foundation for future reading, writing and learning.

To this end, the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals has launched a series of "Sensory Motor Parent-child Play". As part of the training schedule, children are required to master basic skills before they begin reading and writing. These games also promote skills in language learning and overall development.

Practical Life Skills Training

Since the introduction of the Montessori philosophy in 2011, our school optimized the school environment to strengthen children's life skills training. The training allows children to have their own time and opportunities to learn how to take care of themselves and the environment. Through these experiences, children are able to learn, create a sense of order, and improve their coordination skills. When children are able to independently carry out tasks, it allows them to maintain encoional stability and improves their concentration skills.

Enhancement Programme

Leap! Body Movement Programme

Since 2009, this school has been a campus partner of the "Leap!" body Movement Programme jointly organised by the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation and Cloud Gate Dance School of Taiwan. This program is designed for children between the ages of 4 and 6 (both lower and upper kindergarten classes). The objective of the program is to allow children to gain an understanding of their bodies through playing games, explore the world, and create different movements with their bodies; under the guidance of music and their teachers, allowing children to learn to respect and understand one another. This programme that began in July 2014 has had continued sponsorship from the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation for the Cloud Gate Dance School of Taiwan, and "Tung Wah Group of Hospitals" has been responsible for the executive management of the "Leap!" body Movement Programme

Opening of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Shek Lei Day Nursery

In 1974, the Board of Directors made effort to support working women in industrial areas and new towns for better standards of living, and to address the urgent need for day child care services. The Board then applied to the Housing Department, to establish a day nursery with lower costs at shorter time period. After the renovation of the premises at G/F of Shek Lei Estate granted by the Department, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Shek Lei Day Nursery was opened on 26 February, 1975 with a capacity of 60 children.

Naming of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Lions Club of South Kowloon Day Nursery

Lions Club of South Kowloon H.K. generously donated HKD $200,000, to support service development in Tung Wah Group of Hospitals. To acknowledge the generosity of the Lions Club of South Kowloon, in 1982 the Board named the nursery as, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Lions Club of South Kowloon Day Nursery in 1982 with naming ceremony taken place on 23 June, 1982, and officiated by the President of Lions Club of South Kowloon H.K. Mr. Ng Chong.

Resumption and carrying out of services at the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Lions Club of South Kowloon Nursery School

The school was relocated to G/F, Chung Wo House, Chung On Estate, Ma On Shan, Sha Tin, New Territories and had its first day of day nursery education and care services on 16 June, 2000.

The first team of Integrated Programme

The first team of Integrated Programme for mildly disabled children was commenced.

The Second team of Integrated Programme

To meet the needs of the community, a second team was added to provide rehabilitation services for mildly disabled children. At the same time, the capacity of the school was increased from 112 to 118.

The Third team of Integrated Programme

Upon invitation by the Social Welfare Department, a third team was added to provide rehabilitation services for mildly disabled children.

Quality Education Fund Project on Early Mathematics

The school, together with four other nursery schools of TWGHs, had participated in “Using Assessments as the Basis of Promoting Children’s Development and Learning” funded by the Quality Education Fund to establish a better professional assessment mechanism able to capture effectiveness of teaching based on which the quality could be improved.

Our school passed Education Bureau's first round of "Quality Review" for Kindergartens and Nursery Schools in Hong Kong.

Won an award on energy saving at the "Energy Saving Championship 2017" (Hanson Outstanding Award and Best Presentation Award) jointly organised by the Environment Bureau and the Electrical & Mechanical Services Department.
